a traveling home novel.
well, after plenty of plane defrosting done by strange looking robot things, i’m back in seoul. the flight was easy. i slept a ton and had an empty seat next to me. bonus! i had no lines at customs, got my bags quickly, and got a ticket for the next bus heading home. it seemed like everything was going so smoothly…
that’s when things got ugly. i had the men put my luggage...

only two more days of this.
dad: you can't do that. it's like yelling fire in a movie theater.
gma: yeah! i know a guy who's in jail for doing that.
me: really?
gma: yeah. but i guess he was the one who started the fire, so...
the usps must love me.
i need to stop buying all of the things in america. why do i do this every time?

i just woke up to texts from 3 of my best friends informing me that our favorite bar is closing down on sunday. they are turning it into a hof. the bartenders are all moving away. this wouldn’t be a huge deal if these people weren’t my friends. if this place wasn’t the one place i’ve always gone to and counted on over the past year and a half. if i would BE THERE to say...

i'm gone for one week...
and i think charlie is stealing my best friend. i knew this would happen.
suburban america. a land where people decorate their homes and then broadcast their own christmas radio station to coordinate with the lights. there’s no place like home.
2am. wide awake.
i took 2 naps today. 2. i’m going to force myself out of bed at like 9am tomorrow morning, and not even sit down until 10pm. i will feel normal again. i will not sleep during daylight hours for an entire month. THIS MUST GO AWAY.
25 years of living bliss.
i skipped work yesterday, trying to sleep off the cold i’ve had for over a week. went back today to much more concern than i had anticipated from the korean staff. almost passed out in my first afternoon class. was told to go home early. slept part of the afternoon. i’m not sure what my deal is, but it will end today. i’m mandating it. because…
birthday plans for tomorrow...
potentially interesting.
shameful admission: i may have gone on a date on sunday with the intention of making someone else just jealous enough to come to his senses. the up side: i think it worked. the down side: the date guy was much more charming and interesting than i anticipated. crap.
2 weeks!
today, i was slightly complaining about the fact that i will have a bit of christmas shopping to do once i’m home, in those 3 days before christmas. “the malls will be sooooo crowded.” but then i remembered that i live in seoul and frequently shop in myeongdong on saturdays. silly me. i’ve been training for this.
Afterschool program in eastern Seoul needs a teacher like yesterday
– who let their 13 year old daughter post on craigslist on behalf of their recruiting agency?

my 12 year old sister is hilarious.
sister: come on. you should live here. it's much better. mom was watching a tv show called kimchi chronicles and it is in korea and they were eating beetles! we don't do that here and neither do you.
me: hahaha. most of my korean friends don't like those either.
sister: but it was a stand on the street and people were eating it. we don't have bug stands in america...
this is t-shirt weather!
i’m sorry, but i find it absolutely hilarious when people from cold climates (ie. north dakota, the UP, anywhere in canada, etc…) claim to not be affected by winter weather. i literally overheard “where i come from, this is t-shirt weather” come out of somebody’s mouth recently, on a day when the high was about 40degrees fahrenheit. really? t-shirt weather? what...

“10. Incredibly depressing women in Indiana covered in cats and glass figurines they buy at The Hallmark Store used to troll the web 1.0 to invest thousands of dollars in tiny stuffed animals filled with plastic beans. That happened…”
i never get tired of these.
the first grade at my school has multiple boys who are ridiculously badly behaved, even at such an early age. this entire year, i have been under the impression that it was simply me and their lack of respect for me that drove them to treat me the way they do. i’m not korean. i’m not “allowed” to speak korean to them. their english SUCKS. they are punks in general....

oh, how i hate ohio state.
we’ll see if i actually watch the game tonight. i have high hopes. but the amount of thanksgiving drinking that will be done prior to it, as well as the fact that i was awake at 8:30 this morning may cause a change in my opinion by 2am. nonetheless, i’m sure there will be plenty of taunting in the morning, one way or the other. go blue!
bad news first, please.
인철: i can get damien rice concert tickets i think...
인철: but it's january 11th :(
me: nooooo. i won't be here. :(
인철: i know. so sad. BUT i got one christmas sticker and one regular sticker for starbucks! haha.

another excerpt.
by 7 year old, jasmin kong.
“A long time ago, there was a boy and a monkey. They were friends. The boy gave a banana to the monkey. So, the monkey ate the boy’s pants.”
선배. 후배.
met up with a friend and her boyfriend friday night. brought my good friend along. it took the boys about 5 minutes to realize that they both were actually korean, yet had been conversing in english the entire time up to that point. after switching languages, it took them about 30 more seconds to realize that they had gone to the same elementary, middle and high schools. what followed was one of...
